Metaphisical Poetry
Interaction with Dr.Mandaliya sir (Head of The Department of English,SP University)
On 17th,18th and 19thAugust Lecture on Metaphisical poetry was organised in our Department of English,MK Bhavnagar University.Dr. Mandaliya sir has great knowledge about Metaphisical poetry and his style of teaching is very good.within short time we come to know about what is Metaphisical poetry and why poets stated writing Metaphisical poem.

What is Metaphisical Poetry?
    The word 'Metaphisical' first time used by Dr.samuel Jonhson in his book 'Lives of the most eminent english poets'.
Dr.John Donne
In word ''Metaphisical" the word 'meta' means 'after',so we can interpret that 'Metaphisical' means 'after the phisical'.It is also known as'school of John Donne' because he was the pioneer.
Samuel Johnson had used this word in a Negative sense but after time passed it become admirable for Samuel Johnson and also for his followers.
John Donne mentions that at the end of 17th century a group of poets emerged with a great idea to write differ from former poets.
  • Major Metaphisical Poets:
  • John Donne
  • George Herbert
  • Andrew Marvell
  • Henry Vaughan
  • Richard crashaw
Characteristics of Metaphysical poetry:

  • Far fetched images and conceits are one of the most important characteristics of tha Metaphisical poetry.
  • Metaphisical poets brought their images from different far fetched fields like:
  1.  Engineering
  2. Agriculture
  3. Architecture
  4. Geometry
  5. Geography etc.
  • Poets use far fetched imaagi to deal with their real theme of poem.
  • SchilarlS poets wanted to write something differ than former.so people pay attention on that otherwise if they write in a same manner of former poets nobody can care about them or their poems also.
In our syllabus there are many 'Metaphisical'poems like:

  1. Flea
  2. Dream
  3. Death be not proud
  4. Sweetest love
  5. Ecstasy
  6. Sun Rising
  • Love and Religion are two main theme in Metaphisical poetry.
  • The Flea by Jonne Donne:

Mark but this flea,and mark in this,
How little that which thou deniest me is;
It suck'd me first,and now sucks thee,
And in this flea our tqo bloods mingled be.
Thou know'st that this cannot be said
A sin,nor shame, nor loss of maidengead;
Yet this enjoys befibe it woo,
And pamper'd swells with one blood made of two;
And this, alas! is more than we would do.

This poem by Jonne Donne is distinct example of Metaphisical poetry.The poet has used theme of 'Love' in this poem and this poem is spoken by a lover to his beloved. In this poem lover wants to convince her beloved that she should not reject his love and proposal.Poet has used biological image in this poem.Through the insect -'Flea' lover tries to convince her beloved that first 'The Flea'first sucked his blood and now sucks her blood ,so their blood become one in body of The Flea.The poet treats it as their marriage and their bedroom.The two blood become one but she has not lost her reputation or honour.

Thinking activity: Coleridge's Biographia Literaria

After discussion in Coleridge's Biographia Literaria we had task to give our point of view or our understanding about it. Here is the link of the blog from where the task was given us: click here. Biographia Literaria by S.T.Coleridge is a great literary work.  Coleridge’s written critical work is contained in 24 chapters of Biographia Literaria (1815-17). In chapter XIV of Biographia Literaria, Coleridge has discussed his view on nature and function of poetry, and difference between poem and poetry. Difference between prose and poem also. Coleridge was to deal with ' persons and character super natural'. As we all know that Wordsworth and Coleridge are romantic poet but we find many differences between both of them. Both had different on their point of view about poetic diction. Here two questions from Coleridge’s Biographia Literaria and we should give answer about this two questions. 1) Differences between poem and poetry.  As we all know that poetry and po...

Thinking task on T.P. Kailasam's " The Purpose".

Teacher's role is very important in our life. We can say that “ Teacher is real guru of students” 'Guru' means whom through we can get knowledge. ' Teacher ' means a person whose job is to teach especially in a school or college. Teacher is a person who helps others to acquire knowledge. Here is some questions and I would like to share my experience and knowledge about these questions. 1. Write something about favourite teacher. Give some reasons for it. I would like to say that My favourite teacher is my ' Sanskrit'  teacher. She is very noble person. She always helps me when I need her. When we were absent in the classroom, she taught us next day also. I like her nature very well. Her method of teaching inspired me to be a teacher in future. I never saw her with her angry face. I would like to see her with her smile. She always suggests us that if you need my help you can call me at  midnight also. She helps us in our personal matters also...
